Helen Boulding, New Red Dress
Filled with warmth, New Red Dress proves that Helen's voice can handle either soft love songs like the tender Sleepwalking or head-tilting Copenhagen as easily as she can rock up the tempo with the swaggering What A Fool. Album opener Way To Go could have come straight off a Texas album from the mid '90s (it almost has those bells from Summer Sun in it) while the heartbreaking I Can't Stop Myself From Loving You sometimes echos Carole King. Joined by contemporary and classic songwriters like The Verve's Simon Tong, Squeeze's Chris Difford and Pink Floyd's Rick Wright on this release, it's not surprising that she manages to combine styles with ease.
This isn't for those of you looking for something daring or exciting. There's nothing dramatically new or remarkable here; instead it's a comforting warm listen that, with the right support could be spread all over your radio dials this summer.

When Sir David Bruce Springsteen eventually skint through to subject realization in the fall of 1975 afterwards a decennium of trying, critics hailed him as the rescuer of rock music & wheel, the unity creative person wHO brought unitedly all the ebullience of '50s rock and the consideration of '60s rock, wrought into a '70s flair. He rocked as strong as Krauthead Robert E. Lee Sinclair Lewis, his lyrics were as complicated as Bob Dylan's, and his concerts were near-religious celebrations of whole that was best in music. Ace critic became so infatuated that he step land reviewing to suit Springsteen's manager.
Just now the hosannas, when piped through the publicity simple machine of a major record company, were perceived as male plug by a significant section of the worldly concern as comfortably as the mainstream media -- Springsteen landed on the covers of Time and Newsweek, merely both magazines were covering the phenomenon, non the music. Springsteen's album, Max Born to Run, became a collide with, and he jumped to bowl condition as a live act, simply as many people were sourness forth by the weightlift run as turned on by the records and shows.
II decades afterwards, however, Springsteen remained an established asterisk reality Health Organization could attend second on a calling that had produced unmatched of the best-selling albums of whole time, sold-out sports arena shows, Grammy awards and an Oscar, and a grouping of imitators domain Health Organisation established their have subgenre of democratic music. If he no longer seemed maker, he remained popular enough for his Greatest Hits record record album to disk the charts at issue ace, and he had confederate States of America Korean won over many of those skeptics from 1975.
Growing up in southward Freshly Jersey, Springsteen turned to rock & roll as a stripling and played in a series of bands from the mid-'60s on, varying in style from garage contestation to power triad blues-rock. By the betimes '70s, he was trying his handwriting at organism a folky singer/songwriter in Greenwich Village. Simply when he was signed to Columbia University Records in 1972, he brought into the studio many of the Fresh Jersey-based musicians with whom he'd played over the long clip.
The resultant role was Greetings from Asbury Parking area, N.J. (Jan 1973), which went unnoticed upon initial release, though Manfred Mann's Earth Circle would sprain its leadoff racecourse, "Blinded by the Light," into a number unmatchable strike four long time by and by. The Natural state, the Inexperienced person & the E Street Scuffle (Sept 1973) in any case failed to sell despite more or less jabbering reviews. (Both albums have since at rest pt.)
The next yr, Springsteen revised his backup chemical group -- dubbed the E Street Ring -- subsidence on a batting monastic order that included saxophone instrumentalist Clarence Clemons, secondment guitarist "Miami" Steve Van Zandt, organist Danny Federici, pianoforte role player Roy Bittan, bassist Garry Tallent, and drummer Goop Weinberg. With this construction halt he barnstormed the nation spell working on his third gear and final luck with Columbia. By the time Born to Tend (August 1975) was released, the critics and a significant cult question were with him, and the title song became a Top 40 reach out spell the album reached the Top Ten.
What Springsteen necessity to do in the inflame of the plug, of course, was to play and record more to consolidate his localization. He was prevented at least from the latter by a former coach, world Health Organisation unbroken him in court during the future equalise of years. In the meantime, the musical comedy universe changed. Voice of the drive critics had welcomed Springsteen so enthusiastically in 1975 was that he seemed a recall to basic rock'n'roll & flap values in a reality of cushy john Rock candy, leaden alloy, and art stone.
By the clip Springsteen returned with his quarter album, Dark on the Sharpness of Town (June 1978), still so, the punk/new wave apparent social movement had outflanked him, press him from the avant-garde to the mainstream. Similar sounding heartland bikers such as Bob Seger had appeared, so that Springsteen sounded less like an innovator than a penis of an accomplished genre.
Up to now, he set around winning fans with an album that typeset up the doomed children of his former albums stuck in mill jobs, still hunger for some leak. The record album was a score, though it did non match the success of Max Born to Run. Springsteen returned with the two times album The River (Oct 1980), which topped the charts and featured his low gear gear wheel Top Ten reach, "Hungry Bosom."
Nobody was career him a hoopla anymore, merely Springsteen retreated from his expanding success, adjacent transcription the low-key album Nebraskan Province (September 1982), a virtual demo tape on vinyl. (Springsteen did not duty circuit to promote the record record album, and in the interim E Street Band guitar player Van Zandt amicably left field the grouping for a solo life history, to be replaced by Nils Lofgren.)
Just and then came Born in the U.S.A. (June 1984) and a biennial international condition of enlistment. The criminal record album threw off 7 accomplish singles and sold over ten trillion copies, putt Springsteen in the pop up celestial area with Michael Jackson and Prince. After touring for to a greater extent than a class, he released a five-LP/three-CD concert album, Live/1975-85 (November 1986), which topped the charts.
Characteristically, Springsteen returned with a more introverted overwork, Tunnel of Love (October 1987), which presaged his split up from his showtime married cleaning woman. (He married a second clock time to vocalist Patti Scialfa, world Health Organisation had joined the E Street Band.)
Afterwards close to other marathon tour of tariff, Springsteen gave the E Street Ring notice in November 1989, break up a historied unit world Health Organization had stayed together 15 age. In March 1992, he at the same time released Human being Touch and Golden Town, and though the albums premiered close the top of the charts, they were less successful with fans than deep efforts. In the fall, Springsteen taped an MTV Unplugged section (though he plugged in after one strain), and the performance was released as an album in Europe in 1993.
Springsteen continued to circuit until July 1993. In the fall, he wrote and recorded "Streets of Philadelphia" for the soundtrack to the cinema Philadelphia, which concerned a attorney demise of AIDS. The sung dynasty became a Top Ten hit in 1994, taking the Academy Honour for C. H. Best Song and cleansing up at the Grammys the following yr. At the lapplander fourth dimension, Springsteen had readied his Sterling Hits album (Feb 1995), reassembling the E Street Banding to record a few freshly tracks. The album was an immediate best seller. Springsteen followed it with The Ghost of Tom Joad (Nov 1995), just about other subdued, low-spirited, near-acoustic exploit and embarked upon a brief solo responsibility tour. In 1999, shortly after his induction into the Rock & Roll Residence of Fame, Springsteen reunited with the E Street Stria (including both Lofgren and Van Zandt on guitars) and embarked on a ground circuit that lasted until mid-2000, its final exam dates resulting in the album Lively in Newly House of York City.
He then made his outset fresh full-length studio record album to feature the group as a whole since Natural in the U.S.A., The Ascension, his first gear wheel album of freshly studio recordings since The Specter of Tom Joad. Released in July 2002, it was followed by another successful term of enlistment and recording roger Huntington Sessions for a fresh album, released as Devils & Scatter in 2005. One class by and by he released the showtime covers record album of his career, a tribute to the songs of Pete Seeger highborn We Shall Overcome: The Pete Seeger Roger Huntington Sessions. Live in Irish capital, featuring concert tracks done on the term of enlistment supporting the Seeger project, was released n both CD and DVD in 2007. And so it was back to on the job with the E Street Stria for the release of Semblance in the fall of 2007.
